SPEAKERS

Keynote Speaker 1

Professor Dr. Teh Lay Kek
UiTM Puncak Alam Campus

Professor Teh Lay Kek has spent more than two decades turning genomic insight into practical bedside tools. Among Malaysia’s first PhD holders in pharmacogenetics (2000), she devised rapid PCR assays now standard for detecting HLA-B*15:02–linked SJS/TEN risk, warfarin bleeding propensity, aspirin gastritis, and resistance to clopidogrel, primaquine, antipsychotics, and tamoxifen. Her lab’s innovations span sport-genomics, nutrigenetics, and allergy panels—earning three patents, a trademark, and multiple innovation awards. In 2013 she published the first whole-genome sequence of a Malay individual and built the genotype-phenotype database that anchors national precision-medicine initiatives. To speed real-world uptake, Prof Teh co-founded Zakesy Biotech, commercialising personal genome analysis and pharmacogenotyping in collaboration with hospitals and industry partners—work that recently pinpointed causal mutations for Danon Disease and CADASIL, enabling tailored therapy. Chairing the Developing Countries division of the Pharmacogenomics Global Research Network and presiding over the Malaysian Metabolomics Society, she has secured RM 1.9 million in grants, mentored 25 postgraduates, and authored 127 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 25). A sought-after speaker, Professor Teh champions “omics-driven” healthcare as the foundation for safer, more precise treatment nationwide.
